Introduction to the course
You’re an experienced diver and you’d like to share your passion with those close to you? With the Federal Instructor 1st degree – MF1 – FFESSM, become a manager and a teacher in the French school of diving.
The only question is : how far will you go?
Prerequisites
- To be able to participate in initial training the candidate must:
- Have a current FFESSM license.
- Be 18 by the first day of the course.
- Be able to speak French.
- Have the Niveau 4/Dive Guide qualification of the FFESSM, Niveau 4 ANMP or BPJEPS.
- Be certified FFESSM RIFAP.
Objectives
Become an Instructor, specifically to be able to teach diving to a depth of 40 metres.
What you can do after certification:
Someone with a FFESSM MF1 diploma can teach, without payment, any preparation or training of all French diver levels.
His or her functions allow him/her:
To guarantee optimal safety conditions during diving.
To organise theory lessons related to diving.
To take charge of technical and practical training.
To progress divers and allow them to attain their objectives.
To adhere to the project and programme of the structure where they teach.
As mentioned previously, an MF1 cannot be paid, however it’s also an excellent path to:
- Become DEJEPS mention diving (Professional French Diving Instructor). An MF1 does not have to do the specific part of the DEJEPS. This saves time (around 6 months) and money (around €5,500). More information is available from the CREPS d’Antibes.

Dates and how to enrol
The learning path is constructed as follows:
Initial training – 5 days
The goal of this training is to prepare the MF1 intern for a teaching internship. It is organised by the CTR Sud of the FFESSM.
Dates: 3 – 7 July 2023

Boat licence – 2 days
The boat license is a prerequisite of the MF1 exam.

Internship
Length varies from one week to 60 days. The aim is to gain experience is a real teaching situation and validate the different modules regarding practical and theoretical teaching, organisation….

Final training – 5 days
The objective of this is to mould and adjust your experience to the expectations of the exam. It is organised by the CTR Sud FFESSM.
Date : 4 – 8 September

Exam – 1 to 2 days
Three teaching tests, one legal and one for an assisted ascent. This exam is organised by the CTR Sud FFESSM.
Length of the course
The course is split into three steps:
- Initial training (one week)
- Internship (length varies)
- Final training (one week)
The initial training is valid for three years, so the course could take a few months longer than three years.
Accessibility for those with a handicap
People with a handicap can apply under the condition that the handicap does not interfere with practice or the act of teaching (safety of students) and after a medical certificate.
Methods used and types of evaluation
A summary of the evaluation at the end of final training is as follows:
- Written exam on rules and regulations.
- Oral exam on practical teaching.
- Oral exam on organisation during teaching.
- Oral exam on theoretical teaching.
- Evaluation of intervening on a distressed at 25 metres.
Price
Initial training (paid to FFESSM): Around €260.
Internship: €150 per week.
Final training and exam (paid to FFESSM) : Around €350.
